OUR PROGRAMS

Platinum Dinner Program:
Dedicated volunteers attend at the Hamilton Youth Detention Centre for our Platinum Dinner program. In attending at the detention centre, we provide the youth with culturally diverse meals as well as provide various workshops, presentations and mentoring to the youth. We also provide a Platinum Holiday Dinner in December and attend at the youth detention centre on Christmas Eve and New Years' Eve.

Second Chance Library Program:
Second Chance has established libraries within various youth detention centres across Ontario. Each of the libraries are stocked with various books, dictionaries and other reading materials for youth of various reading levels. In addition, we have obtained donations of various sports paraphernalia (i.e. Football helmet from NFL player; Autographed Raptor's jersey, etc.) that are displayed in the libraries which make them more inviting for the youth. The following are the library that have been opened to date:
  • The Faye McWatt Second Chance Library (opened on July 4, 2005)
    Hamilton-Wentworth Youth Detention Centre

  • The Michael H. Tulloch Second Chance Library (opened on February 23, 2006)
    Sprucedale Youth Centre (Simcoe, Ontario).

  • The Peter Cory Second Chance Library (opened on December 15, 2006)
    Bluewater Youth Centre (Goderich, Ontario)

Second Chance Steel Pan Group:
Second Chance has established the Second Chance Steel Pan Group within various youth detention centres across Ontario. World renowned panpiper, Hameed Shaqq, attends at each of the youth centres once a week to teach the youth how to play the steel pan. The program not only teaches them how to play the steel pan and general music education and skill development, but also leadership, cooperation, tolerance, and respect. The program is currently being offered at:
  • Bluewater Youth Centre (Goderich, Ontario);
  • Brookside Youth Centre (Cobourg, Ontario);
  • Hamilton Youth Detention Centre; and
  • Sprucedale Youth Centre (Simcoe, Ontario).
Roy and Ria McMurtry Endowment Fund: On March 1, 2005, the Hon. Roy McMurtry (Chief Justice of Ontario as he then was) was recognized by the Law Foundation of Ontario with the Guthrie Award. As such, the Roy and Ria McMurtry Endowment was established with the Chief Justice being able to select a charity of his choice to receive the endowment. Second Chance was chosen and received the endowment.
